The
jaw joint or tempero-mandibular joint (TMJ) is a very
complex structure. The joint moves in a variety of ways
and like all joints may become dysfunctional. Symptoms
of TMJ disorder or dysfunction, includes general pain,
inability to open or close (locking jaw), clicking of
the joint and even arthritis. The stability of the TMJ
is affected by factors such as stress and the occlusion.

A
significant cause of TMJ disorder is the loss of
back teeth. Loss of occlusion allows the jaws to
over-close and strain the TMJ. In addition, the
remaining teeth take a much greater strain, with
detrimental consequences. Re-establishment of a
complete and balanced occlusion is thus very important
to achieve oral heath. Occlusal rehabilitation involves
the disciplines of both restorative and implant
dentistry. It may be a very involved and lengthy
process, thus prevention of tooth loss is highly
desirable.
