Dental Implants

Dental implants are devices made of titanium that replace the root of a natural tooth. After an implant is placed into the underlying bone artificial teeth are attached to it to provide something that is both aesthetic and functional. Modern day implant therapy was developed, in Sweden, by Dr Per Ingvar Branemark, a Swedish orthopaedic surgeon and researcher, who made the observation that a titanium implant would predictably bond with the bone. This process is called osseointegration and resulted in the first dental implants being placed in 1965.

Since that time dental implants have been accepted worldwide with more than one and a half million people benefiting from this technique.

From the replacement of one missing tooth to all the teeth implants can provide a predictable long-term solution giving a fully functional, aesthetic result. The original recipient is still enjoying the benefits of his implants to this day.

Treatment takes several stages (click on the image for more details):

Stage 1.
Evaluation

Stage 2.
Implant placement

Stage 3.
Connection to the implant.

Stage 4.
Fixing the artificial teeth.

Stage 5.
Follow up

Are implants for everyone?
In general the answer is yes. However, each patient undergoes individual treatment that involves great technical expertise by the dental team and laboratory technicians. The implants themselves are manufactured using surgical grade titanium under the most stringent quality controls. Their placement is under strict conditions of sterility and follows well tested gentle surgical techniques. Highly specialized laboratory technicians are involved in the production of bespoke restorations.

Implants provide predictable, secure, functional and attractive teeth. Dental implant treatment is costly, but not expensive. It is a long-term investment providing long term benefits.

What dental implant system do we use?
Aquae Sulis Dental Practice uses systems produced by Astra Tech and Nobel Biocare, world leaders in implant manufacture, research and education. Further information can be obtained at www.astratechuk.com and www.nobelbiocare.com.
